Trans female athletes need to lower their levels of testosterone, sports governing body the IAAF has ruled.
To be able to compete at the category competitors must now keep their levels of natural testosterone below five nanomoles per litre of blood.
The IAAFs previous limit for natural testosterone has been 10 nanomoles.
The new law is just like what applies to athletes using differences of sexual development (DSD), such as Caster Semenya.
Semenya is challenging that the IAAF rules that other athletes using DSD and she must take medication to be able to compete to the mile in track events from 400m or change to another space.
The rules on testosterone levels had been announced on Monday after a meeting with the IAAF Council at Doha.
Under the regulations that a transgender female athlete is no more needed to be recognized by law in her sex but should provide a signed statement which her gender identity is female.
She must show that the testosterone level in her serum is greater than five nanomoles for a period of 12 or more months and has to maintain below that level.
