I hoped we were fitting in— especially one night, when I realized some of the other dancers were keeping a close eye on us. Steve and I straightened to attention, checking to make sure we maintained the squared-off stance we’d learned in those dance lessons he’d taken so reluctantly. My left hand on his shoulder, my right hand held aloft in his. His stance a mirror image of mine, except for his right hand resting on my waist. Enough tension in my arms to give him something to work against. “Pretend you are hugging a tree trunk,” the dance teacher in Chicago had suggested.

I should have known. But the men at the bar seemed concerned about our plight. They conferred back and forth. ” A phone appeared from behind the bar, and one of the men made a couple of calls. I felt touched by the flurry of activity—and surprised. It turned out somebody knew about a new place—actually, an old place that had just reopened, called the Blue Goose. It used to be a rowdy venue, with chicken wire to protect the musicians and card games going on in the back room. When we walked in, the newly renovated club smelled like fresh wood and could have passed for a country-style bed and breakfast.

Others offered replies that didn’t make sense. One man said: “I can order you the real thing, a handmade Cajun accordion from Louisiana. ” I didn’t listen to him. Eventually, I tried Walles Music, a store on Chicago’s far West 26 Beginnings Side. “Yes, we have what you’re looking for,” said the voice over the phone. ” Finally— someone who knew what I was talking about. And the price was right. No point in investing too much money in an instrument I might never learn to play. Steve and I set out for Walles Music one Saturday when the boys were visiting my parents.
