268). To date there has been little speculation or discussion in the literature about the surprisingly small size of cultural differences in values. As a result of the failure to find large cultural differences, the Three Society project changed its direction toward trying to understand this phenomenon. The first attempt focused on a search for less obvious kinds of statistical differences. There were some successes in this venture, which are presented in the chapters that follow. However, in was in working with Leininger’s and Minami’s ethnographic data, as well as with published ethnographic reports by Fujita, Sano, Shimizu, and others about Japanese norms and values, that ideas first began to emerge that could explain the apparent paradox.

The groups that are included with collectivism are notable sources of social solidarity in modern society—family, religion, and nation—, which are sometimes referred to as the basic sources of diffuse primordial sentiments of solidarity. It is striking that the institutions of the market and the groups formed by companies are excluded from this dimension. Individualism values the singular I, collectivism the plural We. Perhaps the business world seems more on the side of the singular I than the plural We.

Major facets of openness include being imaginative, having artistic interests and concern with intellect, being open in emotional expression, and adventurousness. Further discussion of the relation between value orientations and personality components are presented later with reference to the Vietnamese data. The clusters for collectivism form the opposite side of this dimension. Collectivism, Oyserman et al. found, is typically based on items concerning the placement of a high value to ties to others and to the groups and institutions that create these ties.
